Are they trying to angle for an extension of electrification perhaps?

Buses of course! If these hourly services get packed during peak hour and get reasonable loads in the off-peak, then it would be time for the service to become a rail service (i.e. an extension of the Waikanae Line).

They'll be needed in Auckland until 2013!

Not enough to build an expressway. The traffic issues around Otaki can be quite bad at weekends. On long weekends the road would have an average speed of around 30/40kph I'd say - on a good day. It wouldn't be worth going to work the friday before any long weekends if you lived in Otaki.john-ston wrote:How much peak hour traffic is there north of Waikanae? I doubt that it would be a massive problem.Brentaki wrote:I cannot see how buses can continue to operate efficiently along SH1 when they have to compete with rush hour traffic.
Have your say on proposed options for better public transport services in the Otaki area.
We need your feedback by Sunday 11 December 2011.
Greater Wellington Regional Council is reviewing public transport in Otaki, Peka Peka and Te Horo.
Thanks to all of those who took part in the first stage of the review which was carried out in May and June 2011.
We've listened to what you told us and have developed some options for services to better meet your needs.
We are suggesting two timetable options for weekday and weekend services that we would like your feedback on.
These options propose to remove some very poorly used bus trips which carry fewer than two passengers per trip.
The money saved from these would fund other trips that people have indicated they would be more likely to use.
For details about the options, please download the Otaki Public Transport Review brochure.
Otaki Weekday – Option A
Option with 9.15am and 10.45am departures from Otaki to Waikanae.
Otaki Weekday – Option B
Coastlands Option providing offpeak trips to and from Coastlands .
Otaki Weekend – Option A
Low use trips removed and replaced with trips during the day providing a bus every two hours on Saturday only.
Otaki Weekend – Option B
Low use trips removed. This enables us to run a reduced timetable on both Saturday and Sunday.
Otaki miffed by transport review
JOEL MAXWELL
28/11/2011
Otaki's public transport review has left the town's community board cold on proposals that provide a "minor" tweak of a service already cut in February.
The board's draft submission on the review calls for it to take a strategic view of the public transport problems in Otaki.
"The limited nature of this review is disappointing in its lack of improvements for Otaki passengers. They will have a lower level of service than before the rail extension to Waikanae and the review offers little or no recompense, just a minor rearrangement within existing services."
Meeting tomorrow, board members will approve a submission on the review - promised by Greater Wellington Regional Council after it cut direct bus trips to Paraparaumu.
The regional council has already stated it has no more money for increasing the Otaki service, the draft report said. Respondents have also refused to pay more rates for an increased service in the review.
