Kaiwhara - seeming you are in the know

There a place where a member of the public can make enquiries on when freight trains are due past a given point such as Papakura Station WITHOUT pestering the Signaller (I corrected that mistake as well) to save waiting around for a while (freight trains hasnt gone by my house in the last hour but will have a few back to back soon)

No there isn't, and strictly speaking the public don't need to know either. However in Auckland the freights are so frequent anyway that you gtenerally wouldnt have to wait too long in daylight hours to see something.

Kiwirail's primary focus is to run trains, not run a train set for enthusiasts. Of course, Enthusiasts are welcome to partake in their past time as long as they dont do anything stupid (and some do believe me). In fact, half of the people on the Railway's payroll would possibly not be working for the railways unless they had an interest in them. However providing information to enthusiasts is not something that is condoned, and nore is it something we are obliged to do.

Are you a member of NZ Locos ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NewZealandLocomotives/ )?

You'll usually find the latest Master Train Plan in the files section, and although intermediate times are not shown, Papakura is generally about plus or minus 20 minutes on the Auckland (Westfield/Southdown) times. Of course things don't run to plan every day, so as Andrew says, you'll likely see something go through Papakura just by randomly showing up.

I'm quite sure the public are actually entitled to know the times of freight trains, and their numbers. Would be a concern if they weren't for many reasons.
It all depends on the purpose - the revelation of such information.

I suppose it depended on what freight the train was carrying - if you were needing to know what time your consignment of goods had arrived at Westfield yards, then you would need to know the times of freight trains.

Well in that sense of course customers require to know times. But I was actually thinking of other reasons. Reasons that both benefit the public and the operation of rail.

Last I checked, you would contact Kiwirail directly about that. After all, you are their customer?

You might not even be there customer Darkie. You may be a regular user of a particular level crossing, requiring information on when the next train is due through, so you can move you heavy machinery across the tracks, or your livestock etc...

That much is true, but I was alluding to the case that if someone really wanted to know when their cargo was due to arrive, checking the NIMTP would not be first place to look, surely?

I suppose it would be. But I was of the belief that the NIMTP is commercially sensitive information. And that customers are informed of train arrival/departure times by/via customer service representatives.

Correct, it is commercially sensitive and should not be made available to the public.

Yep. 6347 came over last Wednesday. Not sure on the reason though. Could be here for a pass through the shops for a checkover or heading to rotten row. Im fairly sure the one damaged in the derailment at Kaikoura last year (6376) hasnt returned to service yet either.

We had DXB 5016 pass through Papakura south (looked like it was running MP5. Nothing like a stroll to the bay for an old dixie once in a while)

Also, a familiar face passes through Tironui enroute to Auckland...

Level Crossing alarms installed at Tironui. Not strictly trains, but close enough.

Something I've noticed: It isn't until you live right next to a level crossing with bells and lights that you really understand how busy the NIMT is now. Until well into the night from early in the morning, there are trains every 5-10 minutes operating in either direction past Tironui.
