Auckland Electric Rail Petition Goes to Parliament

A petition to electrify Auckland’s rail network will be presented to Auckland Green MP Keith Locke in Wellington today [Tuesday].
Petition organisers The Campaign for Better Transport wanted to highlight the popular support for electrification ahead of the Budget being released in mid May. The petition has been running for just under four weeks and gathered 3,775 signatures to date.
“We desperately need more trains in Auckland. Electric trains are faster, more reliable, quieter and less polluting. Reducing our reliance on imported fossil fuels is an added bonus,” said spokesperson Cameron Pitches, noting that recent crude oil prices are heading towards all time highs of $US70 per barrel.
Responding to rumours that electrification may be funded through a fuel tax, Mr Pitches urged the Government to consider funding the project “up front”, as the order for trains needed to be placed immediately.
In February the Government announced a $100 million infrastructure bond issue, half of which is committed to accelerating roading projects.
“Roading projects have a range of funding sources – why aren’t the same options available for public transport?,” asks Mr. Pitches.
Keith Locke MP was looking forward to receiving the petition.
“Lots of Aucklanders have been overseas and know how comfortable and smooth electrified trains are. We must seize the moment - and that is in this year’s budget,” he said.
Mr. Pitches said the Campaign for Better Transport was grateful for the Green's support on electrification.
“However, we are hoping the petition will appeal to all political parties. From an environmental and an economic perspective, there is no reason why it shouldn’t,” concludes Mr. Pitches.
