NW Cycle Way to Close Next Week

A section of Auckland's north western cycleway is scheduled to close for a week from the 21st of May, yet Auckland City has not got around to erecting signs to notify cyclists yet.

A cyclist and regular user of the cycleway, Christine Tregidga, reports that ACC have advised they will try to erect signs on Thursday.  Christine only found out about the repairs from Waitakere City Council.  The section affected lies between Great North Rd (Pt Chev) and Patiki Road (Avondale).  According to Christine:

  • ACC are only repairing sections of the cycleway.  The track already has a number of patches on it which Christine describes as "rough and horrible to ride on".
  • The bridge under Patiki Rd is not included in the repairs. This bridge over the mangroves is made from wooden planks, with asphalt over them.  The asphalt has fallen through the gaps between the planks (approx 1-2cm) so that you are riding on an extremely bumpy surface, which vibrates you bike to pieces!  This is in need of urgent repair.
  • There is no alternative route

Christine reckons that Auckland City should rethink their plan and repair it properly.  Whaddya reckon?
