Is Road Construction Worth the Wait?
A US study finds that motorists can lose more time in delays due to road construction than they will save in years of driving on the newly "improved" road.
In a study that dates back to 1999, but is still relevant today, it was found that road expansion projects often deliver scant time savings to people who use the road everyday, while allowing and even stimulating significantly more traffic once the construction project is completed.
Examples include the I-15 highway expansion in Salt Lake City, Utah, where it was found that commuters won't break even on the time they wasted during construction until 2010, a full eight years after the project is completed.
