North Shore – Hospital Buses

Dr Garth MacLeod is leading a campaign to have a better bus service from the North Shore to Auckland City Hospital.

Currently there is no bus service from North Shore which directly supplies Auckland City Hospital (ACH) and Auckland Medical School despite populations of about 6,000 staff, 500 students and 1,000 patients.

Currently direct buses from the Northern Busway stop 12 minutes walk from ACH. To avoid the 12 minute walk passengers can make a connection at Britomart or Midcity.

The timing also misses the largest group of hospital staff, the nurses, whose shifts are 0700-1500, 1500-2300, 2300-0700, 0700-1900 and 1900-0700 meaning nearly all North Shore based nurses drive cars to ACH.

ADHB travel plans recognize that travel to ACH is a serious issue affecting:

  • Patient access to care, due to difficulties of congestion and commuting time
  • Finances with off site parking costing $1,846 per park per year
  • Staff retention with reporting of trouble with travel and parking
